Baby Talk

ear

Psalms 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God..."

Do you know the sound of His sweet small voice? See God speaks in different ways but one of the ways He speaks to His children is similar to the way we talk to babies. In fact science has found that people have the tendency to speak in a “sing-songy” voice with babies because we understand instinctively that babies respond more positively and happily to the higher pitched soft sounds of "baby talk". No matter how old we become in the Lord we are still little to Him. We are referred to as "children" all throughout scripture. Who has attained the great knowledge of God completely? Not one of us. Now you are probably thinking, "I've never heard God's voice" but there is more than one way to hear; with our ears, and then spiritually. Spiritually God will speak in a small quiet voice when He is attempting to draw you away from something to Himself and, in this case, it can’t be heard with your ears but it is discerned within your spirit.

Because He is gentle and patient and kind, He will not demand you stop what you are doing and get away to be alone with Him. He will woo and coo you to come to Him.

You are probably familiar with the story in 1 Kings 19:11-13 where God gave Elijah instructions. "And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him..."

Now the Lord passed by and was present while the winds were blowing and the rocks were breaking but He was not found to be in them. The script tells us the Lord was not in those demonstrative occurrences. You can be in the presence of the Lord and still miss Him! He is big, but He doesn’t always present Himself that way.

There are times in our lives when all the things we've ever wanted become more of a reality in our life yet we are the most unfulfilled as ever. Something is missing; there is emptiness. One might say, “All my bills are paid, I have no debt, my children are happy and healthy, my job and marriage rocks and everything in my life is in cruise control, but inside of my heart I have a longing for something I cannot ascertain.” I want to cruise and then I don't want to cruise. "What is wrong with me" you may find yourself asking? The only thing that will bring peace is the wonderful realization that I can hideaway and talk with My Lord AT ANY TIME. This feeling and realization IS His sweet small voice bidding me to come and spend time with Him. Everything God does He does with purpose. Perhaps there is something He wants to tell me. Perhaps there is something in my daily schedule that is not healthy for me and I have yet to realize it but He can let me know. Perhaps I have pushed my pain so far away from me I think I have dealt with it but He knows it festers and grows and He would like to do something about it. Whatever it is I know that it is good for me, because He is good. Even if it happens to be painful, it is still good for me because the Lord wants the best for me.

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Have you felt this way; fulfilled and empty at the same time? A little bored with life? Longing? Sensing without clear direction? Recognize this as the Lord making a spiritual call to you to turn all focus back to Him and not let the cares of this world and desires of this fleeting life capture the seat of highest priority in life. Yes, I have responsibilities and I can take care of those things, but if something has to wait for a moment, which will you choose? Will I make God wait or will the dirty dishes still be there in an hour? Is it possible that eating a tad bit later will actually not be the end of the world when it is God who competes for my attention?

God will redeem your time. We know that time is of no matter with God because in heaven the measure of time is simply eternity. WITH GOD a day is a thousand years and a thousand years is a day. But here on earth a day is the measure of 24 hours, light and then darkness. What will you do with a life that is measured in only a certain number of days? Do not ignore the still small voice. There are amazing things to be found in it. Everything else will need doing again in a week or more. It’s never truly urgent, but His voice is.
